One of my boys said this was their favorite lesson so far this year. This is from Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding, Vol. II, grades 3-5. I gave them each a tray with a piece of wood, a roll of tape, some rubber bands, a flashlight bulb, a AA battery and a piece of conduit. I gave them no other instructions except, "make the lightbulb light up" and they did! It took about twenty minutes full of failed attempts but they both figured out the correct configuration at nearly the exact same time.
